Man found dead after fire in Duluth, "suspicious circumstances" prompt investigation, police say
DULUTH, Minn. — A man found dead in a burning apartment last week in Duluth has raised the suspicion of authorities, prompting further investigation.Maxton Gudowski, 25, was found dead after an apartment fire on the 600 block of North 47th Avenue East on Thursday, the Duluth Police Department said.The Duluth Fire Department responded around 2:30 a.m. to find smoke, but no visible flames. Firefighters evacuated the building and found an active fire inside a first-floor unit. After extinguishing the fire, crews found Gudowski inside the apartment.On Wednesday, the police department said there were "suspicious circumstances" surrounding Gudowski's death."This remains a very active and ongoing investigation," police said.Anyone with information is asked to call Duluth police at 218-730-5050.The fire caused about $25,000 in damage, the fire department said, but did not displace any residents.
Man accused of threatening Chippewa Co. courthouse appears in court
CHIPPEWA FALLS — The man accused of repeatedly making threats to the Chippewa County Courthouse and employees there appeared in court on Wednesday for the first time since he was extradited back to Wisconsin. Harley Alcala, 40, of Duluth, Minn., is charged with making terrorist threats, threats to injure, and two counts of threats to a judge or prosecutor, stemming from a May 2023 incident. MN COURT OF APPEALS ORDERS NEW TRIAL FOR MAN CONVICTED OF ATTEMPTED MURDER
(Duluth, MN) — A man convicted of attempted murder in Duluth last year will get a new trial. A three-judge panel of the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled this week that Seneca Steeprock had his constitutional rights violated. Prosecutors used DNA evidence to tie Steeprock to a 2020 shooting in Duluth. The appeals court ruled that the DNA was improperly collected from Steeprock because it was obtained by a court order rather than a search warrant. The court said investigators could seek another DNA sample before he is tried again.
