Mississippi newspaper Clarion-Ledger releases its highly-anticipated Dandy Dozen every year a few weeks before high school football begins. The list is held in high-regard and features some of the best to ever do it in the Magnolia State. Ole Miss names ranging from Suntarine Perkins to Snoop Conner to Mike Espy to Doug Buckles and even as far back as Ta’Boris Fisher have made the cut.

In this year’s edition of the heralded list, Ole Miss has three commits who received the esteemed honor. Let’s take a look at each prospect, complete with a scouting report from On3.

4-star Andrew Maddox – DL, No. 185 overall

“Violent hand fighter as a defensive line prospect who has tremendous power in his hands and pairs with an excellent first step and pad level. Measured in at 6-foot-3, 275 pounds during summer campus visits and displays an impressive wingspan at nearly 6-foot-8. Wide variety of pass rush moves including hand swipes, swims and stabs. Stout run defender who can sink his weight and anchor at the point of attack. Plays with a strong motor, consistently chases plays from the backside. High floor and high upside prospect. Early rotational player the second he steps on a college campus. Could develop into a true 3-down interior defender who excels in the run and passing game.”

4-star Jarcoby Hopson – LB, No. 201 overall

“He plays offense, at every level on defense and special teams. As a junior, Hopson made 71 tackles and four tackles for loss while also throwing four touchdowns and running for 785 yards and eight more scores. The 6-foot-2, 205 pound prospect finished the year with 935 total yards. He truly does it all. Superb athlete with some physicality added to the frame. Went from a wiry defensive back to a 210+ pound hybrid linebacker/safety playmaker.”

Holmes County Central defensive back Cortez Thomas, photographed in Ridgeland, Miss., Aug. 10, 2024, is a member of the 2024 Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen.

    4-star Cortez Thomas – S, No. 300 overall

“He is really good in coverage, especially one-on-one,” one scout said. “He is a ball hawk with physicality. Short-area quickness and acceleration. He loves the game and is tough as hell. Thomas has everything you love at the safety position with some versatility as well. I’ve seen him play corner and seen him shut down really good receivers with ease. The length plays and he has long speed in space.”

There are a few others on the list who could join Lane Kiffin’s 2025 class. George County (Miss.) quarterback Deuce Knight is seemingly down to Auburn and Ole Miss despite being committed to Notre Dame. Quitman (Miss.) running back Akylin Dear decommitted from Ole Miss in June but is still undecided. Choctaw County (Miss.) wide receiver Caleb Cunningham is firm with Alabama, but Ole Miss is pushing hard. Winona Secondary School (Miss.) linebacker Tyler Lockhart , once considered a longshot, still talks with the Rebels. And Velma Jackson (Miss.) EDGE Tyshun Willis is definitely one to keep an eye on down the stretch.
