There were no injuries at running back. I repeat, there were no injuries at running back.

The team took the field on Tuesday night for a practice in half pads. The story of the practice was there were a number of shifts on the first team, not that those changes are permanent. It’s just a reminder that competition is still taking place and will until after the third scrimmage.

    Offensive line

Kelvin Banks Cole Hutson Jake Majors DJ Campbell Cameron Williams . Hayden Conner played center on the second team. I suspect this practice was designed to get him more reps in the event he’s needed as a backup behind Majors and Hutson at center. It it sort of telling that Hutson was at left guard rather than Neto Umeozulu .

Having Hutson as a Swiss army knife interior player is a cheat code.

    Secondary

Jahdae Barron Michael Taaffe Derek Williams Jaylon Guilbeau Malik Muhammad . Barron was at boundary but we’re used to that by now. It was interesting that Andrew Mukuba wasn’t with the ones. I’m still not certain how safety will play out but Taaffe does appear to be a constant.

At this point I expect Barron to pair with Muhammad and start at boundary corner.

With all the experience in the secondary the DB’s are good at disguising the different calls. That could be a subtle story for the defense this season.

    Wide receiver

Isaiah Bond DeAndre Moore Silas Bolden . Even after a strong scrimmage from Matthew Golden , Moore was with the ones at slot receiver. That’s not much of a surprise since any one of the Top 6 receivers could start but it’s worth noting.

Bond beat Gavin Holmes on a deep ball where Quinn Ewers looked off the defense then swung back to hit Bond on a skinny post.

    Notes

***The defense got the better of the offense, though there were a couple of good runs towards the end of practice. The defense did a good job of creating pressure, forcing Ewers to hit the check down.

***Ewers did hit Silas Bolden on a deep crosser and Arch Manning hit a deep ball to Ryan Wingo but overall the quarterbacks didn’t connect much down the field. That’s a good sign for the secondary.

***”The defense held its ground at the point of attack.” Bill Norton looks and acts the part of someone willing to do the dirty work while others around him make plays.

***Wide receiver Ryan Niblett got a carry or two at running back but struggled with ball security. Derion Gullette was at linebacker. We don’t anticipate Gullette making a switch to offense.

*** Jaydon Blue had a couple of nice runs but he wasn’t out there in team a whole lot. Tre Wisner had a screen during ‘3rd and 7’ drill that probably would have gone to the house. On this play, the offense punished defensive overplay and Wisner hit the sideline for a big gain.

*** Juan Davis looked good mixing it up at H-back. Davis doesn’t lack for want-to as a blocker. Amari Niblack also had some good snaps. Overall, tight end is in a good spot.

***Special teams got a lot of work though it was mainly field goal and kick off. Both Bert Auburn and Will Stone were burying their field goals.

***I don’t believe Morice Blackwell practiced during team which opened the door for Tyanthony Smith at second team Will linebacker. Sources are extremely high on Smith long-term.
