Preston Stone claims SMU RB Brashard Smith reminds him of Reggie Bush

The SMU Mustangs ended up winning a closer game against the Nevada Wolf Pack than they may have liked. Still, SMU was able to get that win thanks to a late rally from quarterback Preston Stone and the consistent play of running back Brashard Smith .

Following the game, Stone made a lofty comparison for Smith, comparing him to former USC Trojans running back and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush .

“I think he’s one of, if not the, best athletes on our team,” Preston Stone said . “He reminds me of Reggie Bush.”

It’s certainly no small comparison to make. Bush is arguably the best running back that college football has ever seen. At the same time, Stone shared how he sees how they’re similar in how they play and the types of moves they can make on the field.

“He’s got lightning speed, lightning cuts, but you saw him tonight,” Stone said. “He’s fearless. He’s not afraid to lower his shoulder and run through somebody as well. So, B-Money went off tonight.”

Brashard Smith finished the game against 67 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. He also had two receptions for 26 yards on the game. He did an excellent job both keeping SMU in the game and helping the Mustangs fight back before the connection between Preston Stone and RJ Maryland took over late in the fourth quarter.

This is Smith’s first season at SMU and he’s working to get comfortable in the new environment. He previously played for the Miami Hurricanes where, in 35 career games, Smith was primarily a receiver instead of running back. That’s a change he made since coming to SMU.

While with Miami, he had 69 receptions for 770 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball 18 times for 177 yards and a touchdown. That’s 9.8 yards per carry. Now, he’s looking to build on that over the course of a season at running back while with the Mustangs.

Rhett Lashlee evaluates SMU’s QB rotation after Week 0 victory over Nevada

SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee rotated both his quarterbacks, Preston Stone and Kevin Jennings , during the game against Nevada. It was a decision he evaluated following the game.

“Preston won the starting job. He’s our starter, but both guys are gonna play and they deserve to play. Our plan all along, I know we didn’t share it with y’all, was Kevin was gonna play the third and fourth series. That’s fair to him,” Lashlee said .

“Let Preston start the game and then Kevin can see it, those two drives and get a feel for what the defense is doing. Then Preston gets to come off and see the defense a little and Kevin gets to come in and not have one drive, he’s got two because sometimes as a quarterback, ‘I got one drive,’ you press and you try to do more than you need to do. Then we were gonna put Preston back in the fifth series and go from there and see how the game went. Definitely, if you’d asked me, I would have thought we’d have played Kevin more. He had our only touchdown drive in the first half, did a great job and he’s gonna continue to play.”
