Ethan Garbers: There was ‘no second guess’ on returning to UCLA

Ethan Garbers wasn’t going anywhere following UCLA’s bowl game win over Boise State . The Bruins quarterback stuck it out through a coaching change from Chip Kelly to DeShaun Foster .

Entrenched as the starting quarterback this season, as UCLA enters the Big Ten, Garbers has more on his plate. But ever the great teammate, he wanted to be there for his guys and finish his academics.

Garbers never second guessed his decision to stay in LA.

“You know, that game was just an interesting game,” Garbers said . “We were down a little bit, and I wasn’t going to sit there, even if I wasn’t (one) hundred percent. I wasn’t going to sit there and just let my guys down like that, you know? So I felt an obligation to kind of go on there and help the team in any way I can.

“Because, I mean, at the end of the day, that’s my most important job. But yeah, I mean, there was no second guess or anything if I was coming back to UCLA. I wanted to graduate from here. Get the awesome degree that I got. And, yeah, pretty much that.”

Last season, Garbers was 98-of-146 passing (67.1%) for 1,136 yards, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. It was the most meaningful game action of his three years on campus.

It’s a new era for UCLA under Foster and at the very least, he has a veteran quarterback in Garbers. It all starts Week 1 against Hawaii.

Hawaii defeated Delaware State 35-14 this weekend and will prepare for the Bruins in the coming week. Ahead of Hawaii’s Week 0 win, Foster addressed the importance of his players watching the Rainbow Warriors.

“They all better be watching the game,” Foster said. “I won’t have them all come in here but I’m pretty sure all of them will watch the game.”

Could this be a shootout? If so, Garbers better be ready to air it out. Seems to be Hawaii’s style.Hawaii gave UCLA plenty to prepare for.

Rainbow Warriors quarterback Brayden Schager tallied 201 passing yards and two touchdowns while avoiding any interceptions. Moreover, Schager notched 38 yards and two scores in the ground game.
