South Carolina went into halftime of its opening win over Old Dominion with a single-score lead. That was largely because of how well their defense was able to play throughout the game. Certainly, the offense struggled at times under new quarterback LaNorris Sellers . He completed 10 of 23 passes for 114 yards in his first start.

The Gamecocks offense was better on the ground, rushing for 174 yards as a team. Sellers contributed 68 yards on the ground and a touchdown, showing off his athleticism in the process.

On the other side of the ball, head coach Shane Beamer should be happy with his defense. South Carolina allowed just 305 total yards and 19 points in the game. They also forced four turnovers in the game.

Certainly, Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops also has to be happy with his defense. The Wildcats earned a shutout in the win over Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles had just 131 yards of total offense on the game and Kentucky forced a pair of interceptions as well.

Offensively, Kentucky has a new offensive coordinator and a new quarterback. It’s the third straight season Kentucky is dealing with both those positions having new faces filling them. That new quarterback, Brock Vandagriff , played well for the most part. He threw for 169 yards and three touchdowns with an interception in the win.

It’s an early-season SEC battle for these two teams. Depending on how things go, it could potentially set the tone for both of them moving forward.
