Both Iowa and Iowa State enjoyed fast starts to their 2024 regular seasons with wins over a pair of FCS opponents. In Week 2, they’ll face off against each other for the Cy-Hawk trophy.

The Hawkeyes made headlines on Saturday for putting up nearly 500 yards of offense against Illinois State, ultimately coming away with a 40-point shutout victory under new offensive coordinator Tim Lester. For the Cyclones, they defeated North Dakota 21-3 as their defense limited the Hawks to 121 passing yards.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook , Iowa is an early 2.5-point betting favorite over their in-state rival. The over/under point total is set at 37.5.

The Hawkeyes earn the early nod not only due to their second-half fireworks against Illinois State, but also because the Cyclones will be walking into a hostile environment inside Kinnick Stadium. The point total suggests a defensive battle in Week 2.

Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara completed 21 of 31 passing attempts for 251 yards and three touchdowns — most of which came in the second half — during his first game back since tearing his ACL last fall. Despite a slow start, the Iowa offense finished the game with 492 total yards in the shutout victory as they rushed for 241 yards on the ground as well.

They did so without head coach Kirk Ferentz, who was serving a one-game suspension due to a recruiting violation.

“I think he’s more than satisfied,” acting head coach Seth Wallace said after the win. “Certainly knows we have a lot of work to do. Like I think he’d stand up here just like I did and tell you the same thing. Like we got a lot of work to do.

“We have good kids. We have a great staff. We have a great head coach, and there’s a lot of work to be done going into this next week.”

For the Cyclones, Iowa State never trailed North Dakota in their 21-3 victory in Week 1. They were held to 86 rushing yards on the afternoon, something they need to address before taking on Iowa’s stout defense on Saturday.
