On Saturday, Notre Dame and Northern Illinois will go head-to-head in a Week 2 showdown. The Fighting Irish will host the Huskies in Notre Dame Stadium.

Although both teams are entering the game with a 1-0 record, oddsmakers expect Notre Dame to walk away with a lopsided victory. According to FanDuel , the Fighting Irish are 26.5-point favorites over Northern Illinois. The over/under point total for the game is set at 47.5.

Only one week into the college football season, Notre Dame is battle-tested. This weekend, the Fighting Irish invaded Kyle Field and defeated Texas A&M 23-13 in front of over 100,000 roaring fans.

In the win, quarterback Riley Leonard completed 18-of-his-30 pass attempts for 158 yards. Although Leonard didn’t throw any interceptions, he also failed to record a touchdown pass. Nonetheless, Notre Dame’s running backs didn’t have any trouble finding the end zone.

Jeremiyah Love led the Fighting Irish backfield, amassing 14 carries for 91 yards and a score. Junior RB Jadarian Price added 44 rushing yards and a TD to Notre Dame’s winning effort, as well.

Beaux Collins was the Fighting Irish’s standout wide receiver, notching a team-high five catches for 62 yards. Notre Dame’s defense was excellent, as well. The Fighting Irish held the Aggies to a 30.7% third-down completion rate while tallying two interceptions.

Freeman couldn’t be prouder of his team’s winning effort.

“I’m proud of this team, this coaching staff, the sports performing staff — our team was prepared,” Freeman said. “They were ready. Like I said, there wasn’t many guys that went down. I don’t know if we had any guys cramping — maybe one. I don’t know.

“We had one guy who had to get some fluids, but these guys were ready and prepared for a battle, and that’s what it was. It was a four-quarter battle. I’m proud of this group.”

Although oddsmakers expect Notre Dame to easily defeat Northern Illinois, the Huskies won’t roll over. The team made a statement with a 54-15 win over Western Illinois in Week 1. Quarterback Ethan Hampton amassed 328 passing yards and five touchdowns in the win.

Now, the Huskies will aim to sweep the rug out from underneath the Fighting Irish’s feet. Alas, Marcus Freeman and Co. are never afraid of a scrap.
