ONSTED — No one in Seth Kordyzon’s family had ever played hockey, but that didn’t deter him from putting on the ice skates.

“No one in my family had ever played, no one really knew anything about it,” Kordyzon said. “My childhood best friend started a couple of years before me and he got my brother and me started into it.”

Kordyzon ended up putting a lot of time into the sport. He’s played since the first grade and recently graduated from Onsted High School. He also put a lot of time into his classwork. He graduated as Onsted’s valedictorian with a GPA of 4.059 and has been named Onsted's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Kordyzon was in first grade when he picked up the ice skates at Arrington Ice Arena on the Adrian College campus.

“We joined the learn-to-skate program,” Kordyzon said. “We enjoyed it, and we enjoyed the team. Hockey was definitely my No. 1 sport.”

Kordyzon played goalie for Lenawee United. He was thrust into action as a freshman and remained between the pipes for four seasons. He picked up being goaltender almost by accident.

“At a young age, with our hockey team, they would let any player try out goalie for a game or two,” he said. “It was one of the things I enjoyed, and I stuck with it. I was pretty good at it, so that helped.”

Kordyzon tried lacrosse as a youngster, played golf for a couple of seasons and on the Wildcat varsity football team for two seasons.

“I really enjoyed my time playing football,” he said.

Onsted football coach Aaron Amthor enjoyed having him on the team.

“Seth was a great young man to coach,” Amthor said. “He was respectful and did everything a coach asked of him. Just like in the classroom, he was a hard worker and found ways to be successful.”

The LCAA Scholar-Athlete award winner was a member of the National Honor Society at Onsted. He said the secret to his academic success was to never fall behind.

“There definitely were sometimes that made it more difficult, but I was always pretty good at staying on top of my stuff while at school. I would never really have too much homework after school. There was studying and everything, but I always managed pretty well.”

    He particularly loves staying active.

“My favorite part of school was the sports aspect. I always enjoyed bonding with my friends through physical activity. I’ve always been an active person.”

The son of Mark and Jodi Kordyzon is the middle of three children. He is working on the maintenance crew at Wolf Creek Golf Club this summer as he prepares to head off to Western Michigan University in the fall. Both of his parents went to WMU.

“I am thinking about doing some club sports, like club hockey,” he said.

    He’ll study business at WMU.

“I just know there are so many different paths I can take with business. I want to get my freshman year done and go from there.
