OXFORD, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Eighteen educators completed a summer program at the University of Mississippi, aimed at reducing the growing middle school math teacher shortage statewide.

The UM Center for Mathematics and Science Education wrapped up its Middle Math Institutes on Thursday, June 27. According to officials, participants became eligible to add on a Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) endorsement to teach math classes in grades 7-8.

MDE officials said Mississippi educator shortages increased last school year from 4,988 to 5,012 vacancies across the state. There were 149 middle school math teacher vacancies during 2023-24, accounting for the largest shortage of the 422 middle school teacher vacancies reported.

The Middle Math Institutes were created in 2021 as another way for licensed teachers to become certified to teach middle school level math, filling vacancies with qualified educators already invested in rural and critical shortage communities.

Forty-two teachers have completed the Middle Math Institutes since 2021.
