(NEWTON) The Newton American Legion Post 20 will host another “salt n vinegar” chicken meal with baked potato, salad bar, and dessert tomorrow night with serving to start at 5:30. CITY OF NEWTON TO APPLY FOR THE ENERGY TRANSITION COMMUNITY GRANT
(NEWTON) The City of Newton has received an invitation to apply for the Energy Transition Community Grant for a second year. The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) is prepared to reimburse the municipality for $61,697 on a project that will increase tourism and invest in economic development. The project currently being considered is the construction of pickleball courts. This is in line with last year’s submission of upgrades to the baseball and softball fields. It is currently the intention of the city to improve or add on to the current amenities offered in order to attract new residents and businesses. Therefore, the residents of Newton are invited to attend a public meeting prior to tomorrow night’s Newton City Council meeting at the Newton City Hall. The public meeting starts at 5:15 before the Council meeting at 6:00.

CHICAGO (AP) — Storms spawning multiple tornado reports blew through Iowa, Illinois — including Chicago — and Indiana on Monday, downing trees and power poles and cutting power to more than 460,000 customers and businesses. A woman in Indiana died after a tree fell onto a home, authorities said.
Severe weather slams central Illinois, again
For the second time in as many nights, damaging winds caused widespread damage and power outages. The storms Monday night resulted in staggering wind gusts. A corn crib was destroyed by a 105 mile per hour wind gust near Camp Grove in Marshall County. South Pekin clocked a 78 mile per hour wind gust, Elmwood 71 mph and Lewistown 70 mph. Wind gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour were common over most of the area. Several communities reported wind damage with the main problem being trees and tree limbs knocking down power lines and causing roads and streets to be blocked. We’ll get a better idea of damage when it’s daylight. The Monday night storms hit as some communities were cleaning up from storms Sunday night which caused damage in Henry and Bloomington.
