Jane Garrison of Oswit Land Trust has announced the acquisition of 639 acres in Indio Hills, California. This area, known as Happy Valley, was acquired for $4 million, thanks to grants from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Section 6 grant and the California Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB).

Happy Valley is a pristine alluvial fan with a rich variety of plant life, providing immense benefits to native wildlife. It acts as a crucial migratory route between the Coachella Valley and Joshua Tree National Park, and is essential for the endangered Mojave desert tortoise, which has been frequently spotted in this area. Additionally, Happy Valley creates an important buffer zone for wildlife, adjoining protected lands on two sides.

Originally intended for development, Happy Valley is now permanently preserved, following years of relentless effort. Nonetheless, over $25,000 in expenses remain uncovered by the grants, including environmental studies, appraisals, taxes, title insurance, and other closing costs.

Oswit Land Trust is appealing for support to cover these expenses. Contributions can be made at www.oswitlandtrust.org under the “Happy Valley acquisition” section. Their mission is “Saving Wildlife One Acre at a Time” and encourage individuals to join them in this work.

They are asking the public to visit www.oswitlandtrust.org/donate to contribute.
