Retired Cook County probation officer shoots woman in NYC murder-suicide, police say
A mother and grandmother, who was a retired Cook County probation officer, are dead after a confrontation in a child custody dispute on the Upper East Side of Manhattan on Friday, NYPD said.It happened just before 9 a.m.People were out enjoying the day, many with baby strollers, and they ran for cover when the shots rang out.The NYPD's Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said that a custody dispute was the cause of the tragic murder-suicide.Marissa Galloway, 45, had just placed her child in the car, and was putting a stroller in the trunk when the grandmother of the child approached.Police...
State, county, city announce 'leap of faith' quantum computing facility in Chicago
(The Center Square) – The State of Illinois, Cook County and the city of Chicago have announced that the new Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park will be built on former U.S. Steel property on Chicago’s Southeast Side. The South Works site has been mostly dormant since the mill closed in 1992. In opening the announcement of the project Thursday, and to the backing by taxpayers, Illinois Gov. J.B. Man charged with setting fire at Bolingbrook senior center
BOLINGBROOK, Ill. - A 21-year-old man has been charged with setting a fire and severely burning a man at the Levy Senior Center in Bolingbrook early Wednesday morning. At approximately 1:13 a.m., Bolingbrook police discovered a fire at the rear of the Levy Senior Center, 251 Canterbury Lane. The Bolingbrook Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze, determining that it was fueled by personal bedding and not a natural occurrence.
Ascension selling 9 Illinois hospitals to California-based Prime Healthcare
Ascension is selling nine of its Illinois hospitals — more than half of its hospitals in the state — to a large, California-based health system, it announced Thursday. Ruby Street Bridge Set To Close For Updgrades
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that as part of ongoing efforts to upgrade the movable bridges in downtown Joliet, a full closure is scheduled to take place on Ruby Street (Illinois 53) over the Des Plaines River, in Joliet, beginning, weather permitting, Tuesday, July 30 to Friday, Aug. 2. The closure is necessary to install aerial towers on the bridge.

West Town's bar scene just got a spicy infusion from the pop-up restaurant, Smash Jibarito, which is quickly becoming a local fixture within the walls of Desert Hawk Bar at 2049 W. Division St. Known for its inventive culinary mashup of smash burgers and jibaritos, a Puerto Rican sandwich staple that swaps out bread for fried plantains, Smash Jibarito is serving up culture with a side of crispy beef patties. According to a Block Club Chicago interview, co-founder Josean Irizarry expressed his excitement, saying, "We're excited to not only bring something good to the table, but to kind of put a little culture behind what we're representing in terms of serving a jibarito smash burger."
