PANAMA CITY – A downtown landmark is set to once again be a gathering place for the community.

The Martin Theatre, originally built in 1936, has sat empty since Hurricane Michael struck the area in 2018.

Panama City plans to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Martin Theatre development on Friday, Sept. 13, at 4:30 p.m. at 409 Harrison Ave.

The groundbreaking will encompass a dapper-themed “red carpet” event that will include some downtown businesses. The event is free for the public, and they will have Martin Theatre-themed collectibles.

“Restoring the historic Martin Theatre so it can be enjoyed for another 90 years at such an iconic location in downtown Panama City is exciting and an investment for generations to come,” City Manager Jonathan Hayes said.

The city plans to transform the space into a self-sufficient, multifunctional facility while maintaining its historic character.

The theatre will offer a community space for performances, the Tennessee House will replace the Martin’s former green room and offer event space for use, and the Ritz will replicate a speakeasy bar and lounge with meeting spaces.

Funding for the renovations and an approval for the bid was passed in July .
