Cyclists Collide in Horrific Olympics Crash

Those tuning in for the women's keirin cycling event at the 2024 Paris Olympics were shocked to watch as a crash during the race led three Olympic athletes to suffer injuries.

During the women's keirin event on Thursday, Aug. 8, six cyclists were competing in the same close space when The Netherlands' athlete Steffie van der Peet 's bike began to tilt on its side and fall to the ground.

Due to the close proximity, China’s Yuan Liying and Belgium’s Nicky Degrendele were also brought down in the crash, with medics rushing over to treat the injured athletes.

All three women were aided out of the main area of the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome to receive further treatment, with Van der Peet appearing to endure the worst injuries as burns were visible on her side and elsewhere from her body rubbing against the ground at high speed. Some of her uniform was even ripped off at her hip. Their bikes weren't in much better shape and had to be taken away with pieces missing.

Thankfully, it appeared that all three athletes would make a full recovery, but they lost their chance at a medal in the current competition. It's unclear exactly what caused the crash, with everything happening in quick succession as the small group of athletes packed close together in a turn.

Video of the accident was quickly shared online, with many Olympic fans sharing their reaction to the "nasty" crash.

BBC Sports shared the news and wrote, "Track cycling can be BRUTAL 🤕. Thankfully all the riders were OK and the track was fixed."

Fans reacted, saying, "Absolutely intense! Glad to hear everyone’s alright and the track’s back in shape. 🚴‍♂️💪," and "Unbelievable🤯," noting how serious and dangerous the crash looked.

In the end, Ellesse Andrews of New Zealand won the gold medal in the finals, while The Netherlands’ Hetty van de Wouw took silver and Great Britain's Emma Finucane got bronze.
