Phenix City, Al. – Over the weekend, University of Colorado Assistant Coach and one of Phenix City’s most successful football natives came back to his hometown to give back to his hometown. Coach Robinson has won a National Championship as a player for the Troy State Trojans, and helped the LSU Tigers win a College Football National Championship as well. Even with all those accomplishments, the former Central Red Devil made it a priority to give the youth a safe place to learn from local middle and high school coaches, NFL veterans and Columbus State University cheerleaders.

The dozens of children were split into groups based on their interest. CSU Cheerleaders taught a group of aspiring cheerleaders some cheers and routines. The Flag Football section of the camp was led by the AHSAA State Champions Central Lady Red Devils. Finally, the aspiring football players went through some drills with the AHSAA State Champions Central Football coaches, college coaches, and NFL veterans. Mayor of Phenix City Eddie Lowe talked about the lessons he hopes the campers learned.

“To always show compassion and always do the right thing. To always think of other before you do yourself because sports teaches you that. Because it’s the team concept. Don’t ever forget where you come from, that’s the most important thing. Whenever they become successful, not if but when, they can implement the same thing in whatever communities they wind up in,” said Mayor Lowe.

Coach Robinson echoed the same sentiment, and hopes the campers can take away some lessons they teach others.

“I want them to be able to say that they learned something that they can take back to their prospective schools, or organization, or cheer camp, or their 7 on 7 team. I want them to be able to take something back. They can say that I learned this from this camp, and it helped me become a better performer. Maybe even a better person. Maybe something that we said that can keep the kids from doing the things that they shouldn’t be doing. Just staying out of trouble,” said Robinson.
