PHILADELPHIA — Sporting a vintage Bob Marley T-shirt, coordinated with a sage green tennis skirt, and matching New Balance sneakers, Christina Faith is sharing her thrifted style with thousands of shoppers on Saturday during The Thrift Project , a one-day second-hand shopping event educating young adults on sustainable fashion and living practices.

“The cool thing about thrift shopping is you can get really cool things that are no longer available in traditional stores,” said Faith, the creator and director of The Thrift Project. “You’re also saving the planet. One of the things we do is we waste a lot of clothing and that is killing our Earth.”

Faith said the idea of the social affair stems from a similar event she attended in Los Angeles. However, she said that there weren’t a lot of vendors to shop from, and that it didn’t give consumers an experience to remember. In turn, the Thrift Project will feature thrift shopping, live music, food trucks, and sustainable fashion education. The event, produced by The Grindhouse Inc. and Show Up Strong ’24 , aims to promote sustainable consumption, foster community, and encourage young adults to register to vote and participate in upcoming elections. More than 50 vendors will sell a selection of thrifted items carefully curated by fashion designers and experts.

“We like to give fresh imagination and bring new life to a piece of clothing,” said stylist Keith Williams. He and his brother, Kree, will have a shop set up at The Thrift Project selling redesigned clothes under their fashion line, The Journi .

“This is a chance to express our artistic-ness and also spread awareness.” said Kree Williams.

The Thrift Project is on Saturday, August 31 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 3525 I Street in Philadelphia. Walk-ins are welcome, but customers are strongly encouraged to register for the event online at The Thrift Project .
