The Phoenix Mercury hosted the Indiana Fever for a big-time bout Sunday. While most of the attention veered toward Diana Taurasi and Caitlin Clark, social media grilled Mercury star Brittney Griner for a hard hit on Aliyah Boston.

Griner and Boston got into a heated exchange that led Griner to wave her arms and push the young star. The 6-foot-9 center picked up a technical foul, and the game went on, but fans were questioning what led to Griner's outburst.

This was one of the most highly anticipated games of the season, featured on ESPN's primetime slate, so there was bound to be some emotional plays.

Aside from that interaction between Griner and Boston, both parties seemed to show respect before the game. Every player was seen shaking hands or hugging prior to tip-off, including Boston and Griner.

WNBA fans believe Boston must've gotten under Griner's skin, which led to the technical foul.

Boston entered the game averaging 12.9 points and 8.3 rebounds. Griner has posted 19.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Both are considered two of the top players inside the painted area, but their battle was taken out of hand by Griner's dirty hit.
