Phoenix Suns rookie Ryan Dunn is one of the best players that coach Tony Bennett's Virginia Cavaliers have produced since their 2019 NCAA Tournament championship.

Much like other players who have passed through Charlottesville under Bennett's regime, Dunn is a hardworking player who puts the team first and shows plenty of humility.

Dunn is far from an average defender based on his 2023-24 stats with the Cavaliers. Dunn stands 6-foot-6 but found himself on the national leaderboard in blocked shots during his final season with Bennett's team because of his impeccable timing.

A report on Dunn's introductory press conference revealed he was named the best defender in college basketball last season by analyst Jay Bilas. A quick glance at the stat sheet backs up Bilas.

Dunn finished 11th in the NCAA in blocks, just seven behind 7-4 center Zach Edey of the Purdue Boilermakers, who was chosen at No. 9 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Dunn was introduced by the Suns on Monday, and he revealed a pre-draft ritual of his childhood that eventually came true.

"Hearing my name called was very surreal," Dunn said. "As a kid, I used to wear a suit when I was young and watch it on TV, and dream of walking across that stage and shaking my mom's hand," he said.

"To do it in real time this time, it was a surreal moment."

Dunn added that he is excited to compete and compared joining the Kevin Durant-led Phoenix Suns to climbing a mountain, a journey he appears ready to embark on alongside the longtime NBA scoring legend.
