A man was fatally shot and another was stabbed in Phoenix Thursday night at a protest, police said.

Officers arrived at the scene near Camelback Road and Central Avenue about 8:45 p.m. after hearing gunshots and found two men with injuries.

The violence occurred during a First Amendment demonstration, Phoenix police Sgt. Mayra Reeson said.

The man who was shot, identified as 51-year-old Paul Franco, died at the scene. The man with stab wounds was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police said there was no immediate threat to the community.

Police used eyewitnesses and security camera footage to find a unnamed woman of interest. She was taken into police custody and questioned but was released, Reeson said.

"Investigators have limited information regarding the stabbing and are working to identify a suspect," Reeson said.

Police did not say what led to the attacks, as the investigation remained ongoing.
