Farm-City Committee seeks nominations for awards

The Pike County Farm-City Committee is seeking nominations and applications to help recognize the county’s top farmer, poultry producer, cattleman, young farmer, conservationist, and agricultural leader.

“We moved up the nomination process to allow more time for nominations and applications,” said Abby Peters, Pike County Farm-City Committee chairman. “In years past, we’ve asked for nominations in the fall, but that is one of the busiest times for farmers who may be trying to harvest crops. We want to encourage anyone who knows of deserving recipients to help us recognize these valuable members of our community.”

Pike County has a long history of outstanding farmers who are the backbone of the Pike County community, Peters said.

“These farmers are leaders in their communities, churches, rural fire departments and local schools. Our committee wants to recognize them for the services they provide in, not only feeding and clothing the world, but for what they do right here in Pike County as well.”

Nominations will be accepted through July 15 and are available at the Pike County Extension Office or by emailing Abby Peters at abbyp@auburn ed.

Additionally, this fall, an outstanding male and female youth in the county will be recognized, Peters said.

“The outstanding youth award winners will each receive a $1,500 Pike County Farm-City Scholarship. Applicants must be in the 11th or 12th grade during the 2023-24 school year. Application forms and information will be distributed to schools and will be available at the Pike County Extension Office at 306 South Three Notch Street in Troy this fall.

Farm-City Week is held annually the week prior to Thanksgiving and helps deepen the understanding of the relationship between rural farmers and urban families. The 2024 Farm-City theme is “Our Community Counts on Farmers.”

The committee will continue its tradition of the annual poster, essay, and media contests that will use that theme. Information on those contests will be delivered to schools this fall.

Winners in all the local Farm-City contests will be recognized during the annual Pike County Farm-City dinner later this fall.
