PISCATAWAY, NJ – An Edison man has been sentenced for causing a fiery car crash on Stelton Road in Piscataway that killed a Carteret man and injured a passenger last year.

Ahmadsabir Ashaq, 20, was sentenced July 19 to five years in state prison after pleading guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide for driving his Lexus sedan over 110 miles per hour before crashing into a Ford Focus that then struck a utility pole and caught fire in the early morning hours of June 3, 2023, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Piscataway Deputy Chief Michelle Pilch on Tuesday.

The driver of the Ford, Shailesh Gurrapu, 24, of Carteret, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Ciccone.

Investigators determined that Ashaq was traveling on Stelton Road at speeds in excess of 110 miles per hour less than 5 seconds before colliding with the Ford Focus as it was turning onto Mindy Lane, said Ciccone.

“On June 3, 2023, at approximately 1:41 A.M., authorities responded to Stelton Road and Mindy Lane in Piscataway after reports of a serious motor vehicle crash,” said Ciccone. “Upon their arrival, officers located two vehicles that were involved in a serious crash. A Lexus sedan, driven by Ashaq, struck a Ford Focus, then struck a utility pole and caught fire. The Ford Focus, driven by Gurrapu, sustained serious damage and caught fire. Gurrapu succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both Ashaq and a passenger in his Lexus were transported to an area hospital for treatment.”
