Former Steelers RB Shares Concerns About Justin Fields

Ever since new Pittsburgh Steelers quarterabck Justin Fields was selected with the 11th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, there were question marks surrounding his game.

Whether it be the fact that he threw to four first-round picks at Ohio State or the famous ‘Ohio State quarterback’ narrative, Fields faced scrutiny both during his pre-draft process and in his first three seasons in the NFL.

The criticism was fair, but his career in Chicago shouldn’t be a sole assessment of Fields on its own. After all, the talent Fields had in Chicago before the team acquired D.J. Moore in his final season with the Bears was incredibly questionable, to say the least.

In Fields’ first season, Darnell Mooney was the top receiver in Chicago, catching 81 passes for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns. That four-touchdown total led the entire Bears receiver room, followed by 35-year-old Jimmy Graham with his three receiving touchdowns.

While his time in Chicago didn’t end in him being the team’s long-term franchise quarterback, Fields is now getting a second chance to become a team’s franchise quarterback, this time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Throughout the Steelers’ notable history, their franchise-leading quarterback in passing yards (Ben Roethlisberger, with 64,088) has more yards than the Bears’ top four quarterbacks combined (60,899).

So, Pittsburgh has somewhat higher expectations for its signal-callers.

Le’Veon Bell had harsh feedback for new Steelers QB Justin Fields

In a social media clip of Fields getting some offseason work in, former Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell had some harsh feedback for the incoming quarterback.

As an athlete, there’s no questioning Fields’ game, but when it comes to his abilities as an intermediate passer in the NFL, his game takes a major dip.

That was something that became more apparent once the Bears were evaluating their current quarterback situation when awarded the No. 1 pick and the chance to draft Caleb Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Eventually, the Bears felt better about starting over with Williams rather than keeping Fields and figuring out a new strategy for the top pick.

In his time with the Bears, the major inconsistency from Fields was his lack of anticipation and trust in his eyes. It was apparent he didn’t trust himself when throwing in the middle of the field, and because of that, defending against him was more about keeping him from rushing than having a masterclass from the pocket.

Along with his lack of middle-of-the-field attack, the timing with Fields left much to be desired. That was the most evident characteristic in the clip above, as these passes were getting to the receiver far too late.

Obviously, it’s just a clip of two players practicing, but if that’s the timing Justin Fields brings on Sunday, Bell could be onto something with this criticism.

Bell has been on a heater on social media recently, and in this instance, a Steelers quarterback gets caught in the crossfire. Friendly fire from the former star.
