Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes.

Already a near shoo-in for National League Rookie of the Year, Paul Skenes might soon find himself in the Cy Young Award conversation after another history-making accolade.

On Friday, Skenes was electric against the New York Mets, allowing two earned runs off four hits while striking out eight over seven innings. The 22-year-old is the first pitcher since 1901 to record seven or more strikeouts in at least nine of their first 10 career appearances, per Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

With only 58.1 innings pitched, Skenes must stay healthy and consistent to earn consideration for the Cy Young. But, if his current pace continues, keeping his name out of the running will be hard.

Along with his history-making outing on Friday, Skenes has produced eye-popping results in just a handful of major league starts.

Only seven pitchers in baseball history have posted more strikeouts than Skenes (78) over their first 10 career starts. Kerry Wood (94, 1998) has the most, followed by Herb Score (92, 1955), Jose DeLeon (85, 1983), Hideo Nomo (83, 1995), Dwight Gooden (80, 1984), Masahiro Tanaka (79, 2014) and Stephen Strasburg (79, 2010).

However, Skenes has the lowest ERA (2.12) out of the group and is the only one to go undefeated (5-0), leaving all 10 starts with the lead.

Winning the Cy Young Award would be monumental for Skenes. It'd make him only the second rookie to accomplish the feat (Fernando Valenzuela, 1981) and just the third Pirate.

Vern Law (1960) and Doug Drabek (1990) are the only Pittsburgh hurlers to earn the honor. Meanwhile, the Pirates are one of only eight MLB teams with two or fewer Cy Young Award winners despite existing since 1882.
