Steelers QB Justin Fields Hit With Brutal Take From NFL Analyst

Justin Fields is getting a fresh start with the Pittsburgh Steelers after coming over in a trade with the Chicago Bears earlier this offseason.

However, one NFL analyst isn’t so sure that the quarterback’s transition to the Steelers will go swimmingly.

Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski named Fields one of the biggest losers of the offseason, citing that he is “no longer considered the future anywhere.”

Fields, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was originally selected by the Bears with the 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

The 25-year-old spent the first three years of his career in Chicago, going just 10-28 as a starter and demonstrating maddening inconsistency.

Fields absolutely showed flashes of brilliance, but he was not able to do it on a regular basis, resulting in the Bears jettisoning him for the opportunity to take Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick this year.

Sobleski notes that Fields is not guaranteed the chance to start in Pittsburgh, as Russell Wilson is the clear frontrunner to land the starting quarterback job heading into 2024.

Can Justin Fields succeed with the Steelers?

The Steelers only signed Wilson to a one-year deal, so in theory, Fields could end up as the club’s No. 1 signal-caller in 2025.

But would Pittsburgh actually be okay with that?

Let’s say the Steelers decide to move on from Wilson after 2024. Would they feel comfortable handing the reins to Fields? Or would they try and draft a quarterback?

Of course, it may ultimately depend on whether or not Fields gets the opportunity to play this coming season.

If Wilson flops, it will absolutely open the door for Fields. If he is able to step in and display that he can potentially play at a high level, Pittsburgh may give him a chance the following year. If not? The Steelers will almost certainly look elsewhere.

Fields had the best year of his career to date in 2023, throwing for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 61.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 86.3. He also rushed for 657 yards and four scores. It should be noted that he did that in 13 games, as he missed four contests due to a thumb injury. However, those aren’t exactly eye-opening numbers.

We’ll see if Justin Fields can make a name for himself in 2024, or if he ends up an afterthought.
