Former NFL QB Makes Bold Claim On Steelers’ QB Situation

The Pittsburgh Steelers overhauled their quarterback depth chart this offseason. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields were both brought in to replace Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph.

Heading into training camp, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has made it clear that Wilson is the starter. But, Fields isn’t going to concede the job easily, as he will compete for it during training camp.

The battle for the Steelers starting quarterback position will be one of the biggest training camp competitions of the summer. There is a lot to like about what each player brings to the table.

But, in the opinion of former NFL quarterback turned analyst Robert Griffin III, the decision should be an easy one for the franchise. He believes that Wilson, without a doubt, should be the starter.

“It’s Russell Wilson, 100 percent,” RGIII told ESPN’s Get Up . “He had a top-five touchdown to interception ratio last year. He’s been there and done that. This team is ready to win right now, and it’s the perfect time for Justin Fields to sit back and learn from Russell Wilson.” ( H/T A To Z Sports )

Out of the two, Wilson is vastly more experienced. Given the current state of the franchise, with a championship-caliber defense, it makes sense Griffin is pushing for the veteran to start.

He has championship experience, winning a Super Bowl during the 2013 season and advancing to another the year after. Wilson has left something to be desired over the last three seasons, as playing in his fourth different offense in as many years will be challenging.

While Wilson is the best choice to start right now for the Steelers, Griffin does believe there will be a place for Fields. His athleticism provides offensive coordinator Arthur Smith with the chance to get creative with some packages and play calling.

“This year [Mike Tomlin] doesn’t have just one, but two dynamic quarterbacks that bring an element of playmaking with their style of play. So that’s why I wanna see the Pittsburgh Steelers utilize Russell Wilson and Justin Fields at the same time,” Griffin said in a clip from his podcast posted on X . “How do you do it? You create a red zone package for Justin Fields, call it the Field Zone package. Allow him to use his athleticism and his running ability to punch in touchdowns…

“…You can build RPOs off of that, which he excelled at in college. You can build boots and keepers and nakeds off of that to keep the defense off balance and allow him to stretch the field and it get his feet wet and allows him to have an impact on the game. He’s way too dynamic of a playmaker to be on the sideline the entire time.”

In theory, that is a strategy that should bear positive results. Opponents have to game plan and prepare for multiple options at quarterback should give the Steelers an edge.

However, that is a strategy we have seen that doesn’t normally work. As the legendary John Madden said, “if you have two quarterbacks, you actually have none.”
