NFL analyst has no love for Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made significant changes at the quarterback position this offseason, with the team parting ways with Kenny Pickett and bringing in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

While it remains to be seen how Wilson and Fields will pan out exactly (Wilson is expected to start Week 1), there's no question Pittsburgh has upgraded its situation under center after rolling out Pickett, Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph in 2023.

Despite that, CBS Sports' Jared Dubin believes the quarterback position is the team's biggest roster hole or question mark going into training camp, along with the wide receiver position. He also believes expecting either Wilson or Fields to answer the bell is "pretty dicey."

And then the Steelers both no longer have Diontae Johnson to soak up targets, and are counting on either a Russell Wilson bounceback or Justin Fields taking a significant step. Either of those things feels pretty dicey.

It's certainly fair to question Wilson and Fields, but equating that situation with the one the Steelers have at wide receiver is misguided. At the very least, both signal-callers have shown they can be a plus in an offense.

George Pickens enters the 2024 campaign as the undisputed No. 1 receiver on the team after a career-best campaign in 2023, but there are nothing but question marks behind him and it's impossible to point to a true No. 2 receiver.

Roman Wilson could end up being that guy, but he's a rookie, so there's no telling what he'll bring in Year 1. Beyond him, guys like Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins and Calvin Austin don't exactly instill confidence as potential No. 2 options and are likely best suited for roles lower on the depth chart.

It's fair to be skeptical with Pittsburgh's quarterbacks, for sure, but wide receiver is the bigger hole right now. The Steelers should be exploring any and all options available to beef up the position ahead of the regular season.
