NFL Analyst Reveals Stunning Take For Steelers’ Russell Wilson

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Russell Wilson earlier this offseason, hoping that the nine-time Pro Bowler would solve their ills under center.

However, the Steelers only signed Wilson to a one-year, $1.2 million deal, so Wilson’s upcoming 2024 campaign is largely viewed as a trial run.

But could Pittsburgh do the unthinkable and not even give Wilson a chance?

Dakota Randall of Pro Football Network outlines the possibility, saying that there exists a world in which the Steelers could cut Wilson before the start of the regular season.

And how could that happen? If Justin Fields wins the starting quarterback job.

Pittsburgh traded for Fields this past spring, and while the general expectation is that he will begin the season as Wilson’s backup, there is always the chance—albeit, slim—that he steals the No. 1 signal-caller job out from under Wilson’s nose.

Can Russell Wilson actually flourish for the Steelers?

Wilson was fantastic throughout his decade-long tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, only failing to make the Pro Bowl once and leading the Seahawks to a Super Bowl title and back-to-back Super Bowl appearances.

Seattle then traded him to the Denver Broncos in March 2022, and since then, the Wilson we all knew from his Seahawks days has largely been forgotten.

The Broncos missed the playoffs in each of Wilson’s two seasons in the Mile High City, which included a disastrous 2022 campaign in which Wilson threw 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Wilson did bounce back last year, finishing with 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight picks in 15 starts, but it wasn’t enough to get Denver a postseason berth.

The Broncos released Wilson in February, and he proceeded to sign with the Steelers.

But will things be any different for the 34-year-old in Pittsburgh?

Outside of George Pickens, the Steelers are severely lacking weapons in their aerial attack, as they don’t know who their No. 2 wide receiver will be. That isn’t exactly a cushy situation for Russ.

Pittsburgh also plays in the rugged AFC North, which sent three teams to the playoffs in 2023 and saw all four of the clubs within the division finish over .500.

It’s certainly going to be a challenging debut campaign for Russell Wilson in Steel City, but the chances of him losing out to Fields and getting cut seem very minute.
