Councilperson to introduce red light camera monitoring in Pittsburgh

A Pittsburgh Councilwoman plans to introduce legislation that would bring automated red-light enforcement systems to the city.

Councilperson Erika Strassburger will introduce the legislation on Tuesday morning.

She will be joined by other elected officials, inducing Mayor Ed Gainey, city residents and community advocates, speaking on the important of “improving road and pedestrian safety.”

Also known as ARLE, cameras take a photo of a driver running a red-light’s license plate.

It reduces the need for police to monitor those driving through red lights.

The technology also aims to cut down on reckless driving and traffic accidents.

But some critics claim the technology is used more about generating revenue and less about safety.

Critics also say it can lead to accidents with driving quickly stopping during yellow lights to avoid being photographed.
