NFL insider says the Steelers QB battle may as well be a ‘coin flip’ amid Russell Wilson's limitations

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially have a QB battle on their hands.

Up until Russell Wilson injured his calf the day before Pittsburgh's first practice, it was his job to lose, and it would take a lot to lose it.

But through 10 practices, it's Justin Fields who has taken all the first-team reps, and shined while doing so.

So while Russell Wilson might still curry favor from the coaches and front office, Fields' play might make Pittsburgh take a long look at the depth chart , with multiple insiders suggesting as much.

Russell Wilson vs. Justin Fields A 'Coin Flip?'

It's easy to listen to the chatter around this situation and just assume Wilson has it all sewed up, but after visiting Steelers camp and talking to people there, I am not so sure," Graziano reported Monday. "... It's a lot more of a coin flip than most think, and I believe that part of the reason the Steelers have set Wilson up as the leader in the competition is because they believe that's the best way to manage him. But I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Fields will show enough through camp to catch him and claim the Week 1 starting spot.

    - Dan Graziano, ESPN

It should be noted that Graziano went out on that limb before Justin Fields' fantastic Week 2 of training camp , and also before Russell Wilson took all of one rep throughout the six-day stretch.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media had a similar stance on the battle when reporting on the situation over the weekend:

"Fields has been leading the team stuff and watching him and talking to some of the Steelers personnel here, it has been an impressive couple of weeks for Justin Fields," said Rapoport. "It is obvious Russell Wilson came into this camp in pole position. But it feels to me, just to me, that it's [QB competition] a little more open than it was just a couple of weeks ago."

Wilson has a chance to re-claim or even hold onto his pole position as early as Tuesday when the team gears up for their first preseason game against the Texans.

But if the reps aren't as clean as Fields, this competition may change dramatically.
