WEST PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — History came alive in one part of Luzerne County Sunday as the West Pittston Historical Society hosted its First to Fall event.

Three years ago, the West Pittston Historical Society decided to remember the events that happened 246 years ago when two brothers from what is now West Pittston were killed by indigenous warriors shortly before the battle of Wyoming.

“We started the event to honor Benjamin and Strictly Harding and others who are buried here, but especially them because they were the first to fall and we just want to create an awareness as well,” said West Pittston Historical Society President Mary Portelli.

The Vice President of the West Pittston Historical Society, Carl Rosencrance Jr., says this is an important part of local history that needs to be kept alive through these reenactments.

“I think it’s very enriching to help keep you know history alive, especially local history so I just enjoy the fact that you know we’re still talking about it. We’re still honoring those first to fall,” Rosencrance Jr. explained.

The significance of this goes beyond the Harding brothers.

“A few people realize that the first African-American patriot by the name of Waco was captured and eventually killed butt and that’s important to remember,” Rosencrance Jr. continued.

Organizers say they want those who attended to have a newfound appreciation for this area.

“We want people in town to be aware of this historic location and to appreciate the history that goes along and that it’s part of our borough as well,” Portelli said.
