City of Plainfield Hosts Ribbon Cutting for City's First Black-Owned Cannabis Dispensary

PLAINFIELD, NJ — On Tuesday afternoon, the City of Plainfield held a ribbon cutting for a new cannabis dispensary, the city's third, located at 18 Roosevelt Ave.
"We are here again to open one of our cannabis businesses in our great City of Plainfield," said Mayor Adrian Mapp before cutting the ribbon for Island Vibez Dispensary. "But what is so special about this one is that not only is it the first black female owned, but I must say, it is the first truly Black-owned, period."
"I don't have to tell you how much we as Black folks have suffered under the weight of the criminal justice system, and that we've been put away in disproportionate numbers even though we don't use drugs more than any other group," continued the third-term mayor. "But we were burdened with a justice system that didn't treat us fairly. Now that the cannabis industry is legal here in the state of New Jersey ... it makes sense that the people who've suffered the most should benefit the most. It warms my heart to see a black female from Plainfield, as well as other minority partners in this venture."
Mapp encouraged residents to support the business, noting that merely opening doesn't make a successful venture. The Mayor said that if ventures like this one are successful, the city will thrive as well, as it will be able to lessen the burden of property taxes through tax revenue.
"[Our] Dispensary is more than just a business," said its COO, Alexis Henderson. "It's a celebration of our Caribbean heritage and a pivotal role that region has played in the cannabis world. As a woman and minority-owned establishment, we believe in the strength of diversity and the empowerment that comes from fostering opportunities for all."
Henderson vowed to make contributions to local charitable and nonprofit organizations, as well as to offer discounts to seniors and veterans "as a token of appreciation for their service, wisdom, and to foster a sense of community and respect across generations."
"Our commitment to prioritizing our community extends to those who have faced the challenges of the criminal justice system, specifically related to marijuana charges," said Henderson. "We recognize the importance of second chances and understand that providing employment opportunities to individuals with these experiences is not just about economic empowerment, but about social equity and justice. By doing so, we aim to break down barriers and create a more inclusive and supportive community for all."
