PLEASANT GROVE, Utah ( ABC4 ) — An early morning fire in a Pleasant Grove neighborhood has been confirmed as fatal, according to the Pleasant Grove Fire Department.

Fire Chief Andrew Engemann said crews responded to the fire just before 2 a.m. and found flames and smoke coming out of the back of the home near 600 East and 100 North.

Crews were quickly able to knock down the fire and in the process found two victims as well as two pets inside the home. Engemann said crews found the first victim, who he described as an “elderly woman,” near the back of the home near the fire.

They were able to pull her out and provide aid on the scene before taking her to the hospital in serious condition where she later died.

The second victim, described as a man in his 50s, was found near the front of the home. Despite life-saving efforts, Engemann said he had died at the scene, likely due to smoke inhalation. Two pets, a dog and a cat, were also found dead inside the home.

Engemann said the two were mother and son and lived together in the home. Neither victim has been identified.

Engemann said the Utah State Fire Marshall was on scene and conducting an investigation into what started the fire.

Currently, it is believed to have been sparked by a possible electrical issue in the back of the home.
