POCATELLO — Idaho Democrats are inviting the public to attend a day of action to protest House Bill 710, also known as the harmful materials bill or library bounty bill, Sen. James Ruchti, D-Pocatello, said in a Monday news release.

On July 1, the same day that the legislation is set to be enacted in Idaho, Ruchti, Rep. Nate Roberts, D-Pocatello, and Democratic House of Representatives candidate Mary Shea will assemble at 5 p.m. alongside concerned citizens outside the Marshall Public Library to protest the controversial legislation.

The contentious bill will permit private citizens to request the library relocate material they deem inappropriate and if the materials aren’t moved to a section designated for adults within 60 days the citizens can file civil rights lawsuits and receive $250, though the maximum amount of potential damages paid is uncapped. The public libraries would have to pay the amount out of their own budgets.

Despite a large public outcry against the bill, including during the final public hearing in Boise before Gov. Little signed it into law on April 10, the bill will go into effect on July 1 for public libraries across Idaho.

The rally aims to highlight the overreach of HB 710, promote support for librarians and condemn GOP legislators who voted in support of the bill, the news release said.

“HB 710 is more than just bad policy; it is an attack on our community values and our commitment to education and free access to information,” Ruchti said in the news release. “Our libraries are cornerstones of our communities, providing safe spaces for learning and growth. We must stand united to protect these institutions and ensure that they remain open and accessible for all.”

Ruchti continued, “Together, we can send a clear message to the Idaho Legislature: our public libraries are not for sale, and we will not stand by while they are undermined. Join us on July 1 to make your voice heard.”

The Marshall Public library is located at 113 S. Garfield Ave., in Historic Downtown Pocatello.
