POCATELLO — A 51-year-old local man was recently arrested after police say he punched another man in the chest and threatened to strike him with a metal snow shovel.

John Douglas Logan, of Pocatello, has been charged with one felony count of aggravated assault following the incident.

Pocatello police were dispatched to a local home around 3:10 p.m. on Monday after a local man called to report that Logan had just battered him, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

Upon arrival, officers spoke to the victim who said that Logan had asked if he could walk to a local convenience store and when he was told no he immediately became irate and started shouting at the victim, the report says.

When the victim tried to stand up from the couch he was sitting on in front of the home, Logan pushed him back down and then punched him in the chest, police said.

The victim then stood up but before he could get to the front door Logan grabbed a metal snow shovel and held it over his head as if he was going to strike the victim, according to the report.

Officers interviewed Logan who admitted to striking the victim and threatening to hit him with the shovel.

Logan was then charged, arrested and booked inside the Bannock County Jail in Pocatello.

He appeared in front of 6th District Magistrate Judge David Cousin for an arraignment hearing on Tuesday, during which his bond was set at $10,000.

He is due back in court on July 16 for a preliminary hearing that will involve local prosecutors attempting to prove there is enough evidence against him to elevate the case from the magistrate to district court level for trial.

If convicted of the felony aggravated assault charge, Logan faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
