A 13-year-old Pocatello girl drowned in Bear Lake on Saturday, authorities said.

The incident began to unfold around 6 p.m. when the Bear Lake County Sheriff's Office received multiple 911 calls that the girl was missing on the East Shore of Bear Lake.

Sheriff's Office marine deputies with boats were in the area within minutes and located the girl, who was immediately turned over to medical personnel.

"Despite heroic medical efforts the female was pronounced deceased at 9 p.m.," the Sheriff's Office stated in a news release.

The girl's name is not being released at this time so that her family can notify loved ones of her death.

"The Bear Lake County Sheriff's Office extends our deepest sympathy to the family. And a heartfelt thanks to all first responders and the public who worked to try and locate the young lady," the Sheriff's Office stated in its news release. "Tragically this incident emphasizes the importance of life jackets while engaging in water activities."
