Louisville summer school joins nationwide collaborative Breakthrough
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A new collaboration is expanding efforts to help kids get more confident in the classroom without costing parents a dime. Breakthrough Louisville was previously known as Summerbridge. It’s a 6-week, no-cost summer school for students in 6th through 9th grade. Their goal is to help prepare under-resourced students in Jefferson County for academic success in the upcoming school year.
UofL School of Medicine announces new dean
Dr. Jeffrey R. Bumpous has been named new executive vice president of health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Louisville. Bumpous, an otolaryngologist (head and neck surgeon), has served as UofL’s interim dean of the School of Medicine and vice president of academic medical affairs since June 2023. He earned his medical degree at UofL and has been a faculty member since 1994. He is the J. Samuel Bumgardner Professor and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders and is an associate clinical director at UofL Health—Brown Cancer Center.

LOUISVILLE, KY. —Pure Spout® held a virtual news conference today to raise awareness of the risk of lead entering schools’ drinking water. While lead is not present in drinking water when it leaves treatment plants, the risk of it entering increases as the water moves through older pipes and plumbing fixtures in buildings. Many public schools nationwide face this risk due to their aging infrastructure, as illustrated in a 2023 investigation of the 7,758 school water systems regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency which showed that 77% of test samples taken had some level of lead contamination.
