Lightning sparks 8 new fires in Josephine County

Homeowner affected by Central Point structure fire speaks out
CENTRAL POINT, Ore.- The residential structure fire burning in Central Point Tuesday afternoon has been contained and mopped up. Jackson County Fire District 3 was alerted to a fast-moving grass fire in the 4200 Block of Grant Road in Central Point at the same time as a microburst thunderstorm. According to Fire Chief Mike Hussey, the fire ignited in the field and then quickly spread to what he believes was a mobile home and greenhouses. He says the fire grew to around 15 acres because of the wind.
Recent shootings in Eugene appear tied to death of a 16-year-old boy
Police in Eugene say they have been working to minimize acts of retaliation between two groups of individuals connected to the death of a 16-year-old boy in downtown Eugene. Young men and juveniles described as groups of teenagers or young adults appear to be on either side of the conflict and both sides were armed, according to a Wednesday release from the Eugene Police Department.
Osborne, Miller fastest in White Cedar Days Run
Jordan Osborne ran an impressive time of 41 minutes and 42 seconds in steamy conditions to win the 10-kilometer race in the annual White Cedar Days run in Powers over the holiday weekend. Luke Rector was second overall in 45:46, followed by female overall winner Emilie Martinez in 47:58. The other runners in the 10K race were Julien Temps (49:14), Jeremy Potter (49:14), Marie Richards (56:20) and Dan Robertson (1:02:07). The 5K winner was Cash Miller in 17:40. He was followed by Russell Crochetiere (24:40), Tryson Bradford (25:40) and overall female winner Tonya Lenser (25:47). Other participants were Brian Hane (26:36), Nora Rector (27:36), Grant Walding (28:32), Brianna Jantzer (32:14), Brystol Bushnell (33:46), Emili Shorb (36:08), Tiffany Hubbard (36:23), Maya Cole (36:59), Dusty Anne Richards (42:03) and Stephanie Hane (42:11).
TENMILE MAN JAILED AFTER PURSUIT INCIDENT MONDAY NIGHT
A Tenmile man was jailed after a pursuit incident late Monday night. A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at 10:40 p.m. a deputy attempted to stop a sedan for violations in the 3000 block Strickland Canyon Road. The driver, 22-year-old Jered Thompson, proceeded west onto Highway 42 and continued with speeds between 60 and 100 miles per hour clear into Coos County before being spiked near Bridge by a Coos County deputy.

Critical Fire Danger for PNW: Red Flag Warning in Effect
The National Weather Service in Pendleton has issued a Red Flag Warning and a heat advisory for much of Eastern Washington and the lower Columbia Basin of Oregon. A Red Flag Warning means warm temperatures, extremely low humidities, and stronger winds combine together producing a greater risk of fire danger.

On July 15th, 2024, at 10:53 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office entered Coos County on Hwy 42 at mile marker 45 in active pursuit of a Toyota Camry.
