WYANDANCH, N.Y. - Firefighters battled a fierce inferno that broke out inside a vacant home on Jamaica Avenue near Wyandanch High School early Friday evening.

Fire crews responded to the boarded-up, vacant home on Jamaica Avenue, off of Little East Neck Road, after flames and smoke were reported just after 5:30PM on Friday.

Firefighters reached the scene to find thick smoke billowing and flames erupting from the boarded-up residence.

As they fought the blaze, firefighters encountered the added challenge of navigating around live power lines that had fallen and began sparking near the house. Eventually, the power to those wires was shut off by PSEG Long Island.
