PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man currently serving time for manslaughter now faces drug possession charges.

Three days after making a plea deal in R.I. Superior Court, records show 20-year-old Kevin Giron was charged with possessing synthetic cannabinoids at the Adult Correctional Institution in Cranston. According to court records, the offense allegedly happened in early May.

Last week, Giron was sentenced for the 2023 shooting death of 19-year-old Juan Carlos Morales in Providence.

Giron was initially charged with murder, discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence, carrying a gun without a license or permit and having committed a felony while on release.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors amended the murder charge — which carries a life sentence — to a lesser charge of manslaughter. Giron pleaded guilty to manslaughter and carrying a firearm without a license. The other two charges were dropped, court records state.

Giron was arraigned on the new drug possession charge in Kent County Court. No plea has been entered at this time.
