CENTREVILLE — Putting children first, Queen Anne’s County Commissioners proclaimed April the Month of the Young Child and welcomed participants and winners of the annual Queen Anne’s County Council for Children and Youth poster contest April 9.

Recognizing the youngest members of the community, the 27th annual poster contest welcomed children from two-years-old to second grade to submit original creative art work with this year’s theme of, “If I were President of the United States, I Would…”

Students submitted thoughtful and meaningful messages with their creative poster creations, said Julie Vallecillo, member of the Queen Anne’s County Council for Children and Youth. The council serves as an advocate for county children and families and includes business and nonprofit representatives, local government agencies, and members of the community, she said.

Welcoming students’ participation from all over the county, 519 entries were received for this year’s contest, “It’s the most we’re ever received to date. All were very creative,” she said.

The winner of the two-year to pre-kindergarten category was five-year-old Carmela Rodgers of Sudlersville Elementary School. Carmela’s poster read “If I Were President of the United States, I would share and make world peace.”

The winner of the kindergarten to second grade category was 6-year-old Ryan Lockwood of Centreville Elementary School for her poster stating “If I were President of the United States, I would treat others the way you want to be treated.”

In addition to hearty applause, both winners received gift cards from the Shore United Bank, as well as Queens Anne’s County challenge coins and official county lapel pins.
