Edwin Diaz was tossed from Sunday night’s game after a sticky substance check led to umpires ruling that the Mets closer had too much on his hands, and he now faces a 10-game suspension.

The ejection came at a bad time for the Mets, who are closing in on .500 and looking to get back into a playoff spot with the trade deadline approaching.

After the game, C-Mac went off on the nature of the rule that leads to these ejections and subsequent suspensions, and the bad it look it is for Major League Baseball.

“Every single step of the way, I’ve hated every ounce of it,” C-Mac said. “I’ve hated leaving it arbitrarily up to umpires to feel hands and determine how sticky it is…I just think it’s stupid. I think the whole thing is dumb and they’ve handled it poorly.

“How about the Players Union for not insisting on some sort of uniform substance that can be used, that we know is used, that can be put on the mound and regulated in some way? Come up with something that works…and can we just come up with something so that we know what we’re dealing with, and anything else, you’re getting banged.”

Right now, the rule is simply that an umpire can eject the pitcher if he feels his hands and deems them too sticky, or to be containing an unapproved substance, and not just rosin. C-Mac says the lack of a uniform procedure or way to determine what is legal and what is not makes the league look bad during some of these ejections, especially when some pitchers are allowed to go wash their hands, and others are simply given the hook.

“It’s arbitrary in every way, shape, and form. It’s ridiculous,” C-Mac said. “It’s been handled poorly since they cut it off in the middle of the season.”
