    Edwin Diaz.

Mets closer Edwin Diaz has been suspended 10 games after violating MLB's foreign-substance policy on Sunday night against the Cubs.

Umpires ejected Diaz before he threw a pitch following an inspection of his glove and hands.

Per ESPN , after the game, Diaz and crew chief Vic Carapazza discussed the incident. Diaz said, "I rub rosin, sweat and I put my hand in the dirt a little bit so I can have some grip on the ball," while Carapazza alleged that the substance "definitely wasn't rosin and sweat."

"I know what that feeling is," Carapazza said. "This was very sticky."

The Mets held on for a 5-2 victory. Diaz, who missed the entire 2023 season with a torn patellar tendon and recently returned from the injured list (shoulder), has a 4.70 earned run average (ERA) this season, but has performed well recently.

He hit his nadir in mid-May when he allowed seven earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched during a three-game stretch, but in five appearances since then, Diaz has allowed one earned run in five innings.

The Mets (37-39) have been just as hot, going 8-2 in their last 10 games. Before the stretch, Baseball Reference gave New York a 15.1 percent chance to reach the postseason. Entering Monday, the Mets had increased their odds to 40.9 percent.

But if they want to keep those odds trending in the right direction, they'll need to make due without Diaz for a couple of weeks.
