Infamous MLB anniversary further illustrates how much of a bargain Brock Purdy is for the 49ers

July 1 will bring at least brief ridicule to the New York Mets until 2035, as it brings their annual payout to free agent bust Bobby Bonilla.

Bonilla will today be paid another instalment of $1.193 million as part of the Mets' deferred contract deal with the former third baseman and outfielder.

That agreement, which will continue for another 11 years, continues to live in infamy, but for the San Francisco 49ers it is a further illustration of how much of a bargain they are getting at the starting quarterback position.

ESPN's Adam Schefter points out that the payment is $208,000 more than the $985,000 base salary starting quarterback Brock Purdy will receive this season.

Purdy's extremely affordable rookie contract is a key reason why the 49ers have been able to retain a star-studded roster that is widely regarded as the best in football.

But this will likely be the last 'Bobby Bonilla Day' in which the 49ers will be able to celebrate having that luxury.

Assuming he continues on the remarkable trajectory he has taken since being thrust into the starting quarterback role as a seventh-round rookie in 2022, the final pick in that year's draft will likely receive a contract extension from the 49ers to make him one of the highest-paid players in football.

With the 49ers employing a host of highly paid stars, the list of which may soon include Brandon Aiyuk if San Francisco is able to finally come to terms on a lucrative long-term extension with the All-Pro wide receiver, it may soon become significantly more difficult for the Niners to keep the team together.

For now, though, the 49ers have the flexibility to continue to stack the deck around Purdy. The hope will be that, come next Bonilla Day, he and the Niners have an agreement on a contract both parties are confident in him justifying.
