It didn't take long for the Washington Nationals' top prospect James Wood to get comfortable in his MLB debut.

Facing the New York Mets on Monday night, batting sixth and playing left field, Wood made his debut in front of a home crowd of 26,719 at Nationals Park.

In his first major league at-bat, Wood worked a full count before hitting a line drive into left-centerfield for a single off Mets starting pitcher David Peterson. He finished the evening going 1-for-4 with one hit, one walk, and one strikeout.

"I was just kind of looking for a fastball," Wood said. "His fastball runs, it's got a run and sink on it. I was trying to push it up and away, especially after I swung through the one down. And then I was just able to get one."

Perhaps what made the 21-year-old feel so at ease in his MLB debut was the fact he grew up in Olney, Maryland, which is about 30 miles from Nationals Park.

"Just being able to play for the team I grew up around and watching, it's a blessing," Wood said, per ESPN

Wood is ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in the MLB. He's 6-foot-7, 234 pounds.

The Nationals would lose the game 9-7 after 10 innings.
