The New York Mets have roughly two weeks to decide if they are going to be buyers or sellers at the MLB trade deadline. But regardless of the decision, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso made it clear he wants to be in New York.

That's what Alonso told the media prior to the MLB Home Run Derby at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas on Monday.

“I’m super happy to be a Met. Super proud to be a Met,” Alonso told reporters . “It’s just been awesome.

“I’d love to stay. I don’t want to get traded. I love it. It’s home.”

Alonso has been the subject of trade discussions throughout the first half of the 2024 season. His contract expires at the end of 2024, which will make him an unrestricted free agent this winter.

Spotrac projected Alonso's market value to be roughly $263 million on an eight-year deal.

The Mets experienced an inconsistent first half. At various points, analysts deemed it a foregone conclusion that the team would become sellers because the Mets had seemingly fallen out of the playoff race.

But at the All-Star break, the National League wild card race remains wide open, and the Mets are in a playoff spot. With a 49-46 record, the Mets hold a 1-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final NL playoff position.

In addition to the Diamondbacks, five other teams are within at least 3.5 games of the Mets and the final NL spot. That should make for a wild second half race, especially for the Mets if they retain Alonso.

The 29-year-old is hitting .240 with 19 home runs , 51 RBI and 53 runs in 366 at-bats this season.
