Tennis legend Rafael Nadal shared devastating news with his fans, announcing that he will miss the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, the 2024 U.S. Open.
The 38-year-old posted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that the reason for his withdrawal from the New York-based competition is that he is unable to give his all at the moment.
The 2024 U.S. Open is scheduled for August 26 to September 8 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York City.
The Spaniard also announced that his next tournament will be the 2024 Laver Cup, set to be held over three days from September 20 to 22 at the Uber Arena in Berlin, Germany.
The Mallorca native will now miss four of the last five editions of the U.S. Open, last competing in 2022, where he was eliminated in the fourth round of the tournament. He has won the U.S. Open four times in his career, in 2010, 2013, 2017, and 2019.
Rafael Nadal Set To Miss Third Grand Slam Of 2024
Withdrawing from Grand Slam tournaments is not new for Nadal nowadays, especially since his injury-plagued 2023 season. He has now withdrawn from three of the four major tennis tournaments in 2024, missing the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and now the U.S. Open.
Nadal only competed in the 2024 French Open, where he played just one match and was eliminated in the first round of the tournament for the first time in his career, losing to Alexander Zverev in straight sets.
The 22-time Grand Slam winner's injury woes began after sustaining a hip injury in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open in January of that year. After missing several tournaments to recover, he dropped outside the top 200 in the ATP rankings for the first time in over 20 years.
