QUINCY − The first mosquitoes to test positive for West Nile virus this season were found in Quincy, the state Department of Public Health said.

Symptoms don't always appear, but they include fever and flu-like illness, health officials said. People over age 50 are at higher risk from the virus.

The health department said no human or animal cases of the virus have been found this year.

“This is about the time of year that we expect to start finding West Nile virus in mosquitoes,” said Public Health Commissioner Dr. Robbie Goldstein. “It is an important reminder that people should take steps to prevent mosquito bites.”

State Epidemiologist Dr. Catherine M. Brown said, “Use a mosquito repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient, wear clothing to reduce exposed skin, drain standing water and repair window screens."

Animal owners should remove standing water from containers such as buckets, tires and wading pools, especially after heavy rains, health officials said.

Mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn.
