RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Six three-month-old puppies are recovering after being abandoned outside of a vacant home in Raleigh, left in a crate with no food or water as temperatures were in the 90s.

“Seeing the images, you don’t realize how skinny they are, until you actually see them in person,” Nicole Kincaid, the founder and director of Perfectly Imperfect Pups Rescue, said. “They were just skin and bones.”

She knew she wanted to help.

“You collectively gasp when you see the pictures of these puppies, I was not at the shelter when they brought them out, but both fosters said they all teared up when they saw how skinny these puppies were, and how emaciated,” Kincaid said.

After one puppy passed away at a local shelter, Kincaid called on her foster network to step in and help the pups. They were able to take two of the puppies, temporarily named Roo and Crunch Wrap Supreme.

“We’re literally nursing her back to health, so you’re part of a journey that’s pretty emotional,” Meaghan Doyle, Roo’s foster, said.

But it’s not a happy ending without a lot of support as the rescue says adoptions and donations are both down and they desperately need that help to take in more puppies like this litter.

“The number one way to help, honestly, is to be a foster yourself, and to step up for some of these dogs and help us get more dogs saved,” Doyle said.

She says the fosters within their network have their own sense of community, and help each other daily with puppies or dogs they’re caring for. She says while it can be intimidating to start, their network is there to answer any and all questions about fostering and helping out.

“It’s a lot of money, a lot of resources, a lot of time, and we can’t do it without our fosters, we could not have said yes to these puppies unless we had fosters on standby and ready to take them,” Kincaid said.

If you don’t have room to foster, there are ways to donate money and/or supplies. You can find donation resources on the rescue’s website , as well as their supply wish list on Amazon .
