A Glenwood South apartment building is set to become Raleigh's tallest tower

Construction is expected to begin this winter on what will become Raleigh's tallest tower.

Why it matters: Turnbridge Equities' planned apartment tower, Highline Glenwood , is designed to be 37 stories, besting The Eastern residential tower in North Hills by one level.

    • The project would be built next to the Creamery building at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Tucker Street.

Driving the news: Construction on the tower, which has been in the works for several years, could begin around the end of the year, CBRE, which will handle leasing at the building, said in a release.

What to expect: Highline Glenwood would be one of two towers constructed on the site of the historic Pine State Creamery property, which was built in 1928 and is currently home to tenants like Sullivan's Steakhouse and Milk Bar.

    • The two towers would be built around The Creamery building, which Turnbridge plans to preserve as the center of the entire project.

The first phase of construction will be on Highline Glenwood, which will have 306 apartments.

    • The second phase, which doesn't have a start date, is expected to include work on a 20-story office tower called 404 Glenwood with 280,000 square feet of office space.
    • Together the two buildings would also add more than 60,000 square feet of retail and restaurants space, a half-acre public plaza and a public parking space.

The big picture: The newly released construction timeline comes as many projects in the area, especially office-based developments, have been delayed because of higher interest rates and surging vacancy rates .
